In a major step toward improving digital finance in Nigeria, the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has officially launched the National Payment Stack (NPS), a brand-new infrastructure that aims to change how Nigerians make and receive payments.
Unveiled in Lagos on June 17, 2025, the new system is expected to unify all digital payment platforms such as bank transfers, QR code payments, mobile wallets, USSD codes, and Point of Sale (PoS) terminals into one smooth, reliable system.
At its core, the National Payment Stack is designed to make transactions faster, safer, and easier for everyone, from banks and businesses to everyday Nigerians using their phones for transfers. The stack works in real time, which means money moves instantly without delays. It also helps resolve issues quickly when payments go wrong
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has ordered certain banks to stop paying dividends, hold back executive bonuses, and pause new overseas investments.
This comes after some banks received special help from the CBN, called regulatory forbearance, because they had many loans not being paid back.
Big banks like Zenith Bank, FirstBank, and Access Bank are among those affected. They may not pay dividends again until 2028, while UBA might resume payments by 2026. Others like GTCO and Stanbic IBTC who cleaned up their loan books can continue as normal.
The CBN says this is to protect your money by making sure these banks build safety buffers, cover risky loans, and meet stronger rules.
That’s the story keeping Nigeria’s banks safe and your money secure.
