Most people think of sleep as the time when your body shuts down and rests. But inside your brain, something extraordinary is happening; something scientists only discovered in 2013, which means we practised medicine for decades without even knowing about it.
While you sleep, your brain cells physically shrink. Not permanently, just enough. They shrink by up to 60 percent, and that shrinkage opens up tiny channels between the cells.
